I tried something new today….
My legs are feeling a bit tired today. I’d be lying if I said I was overly excited for a bout of mile repeats. The temperature outside is climbing. I’m not sure what the exact read was by the time I actually got started, but the high for the day is 94 degrees. I started my sticky warm-up at 9am, already feeling the sun beating down on the hot black track.
I found this buy at the local Georgetown Market. The flavor is Orange Cream. I thought I’d give it a try today after my workout. I have to admit that almost every run I daydream of popsicles and slushies. They just sound so refreshing on a hot, sticky day. The flavor orange cream reminded me exactly of an orange creamsicle – perfect!
What nutritionally this drink has to offer is 16 grams of protein and 17 grams of carbohydrate. This is beneficial to boosting the recovery process after an intense workout such as a 5 x 1 mile workout. The downfall is that this drink will not cut it alone. With only 17 grams of carbohydrate it doesn’t have quite enough carbohydrate as the ideal recovery drink. A general rule of thumb is to eat about half your body weight in carbohydrates and 10-20 grams of protein within 30 minutes of such a grueling run.
No worries, simply add a carbohydrate-rich choice. For me today it was a couple fruit leathers since they were easily available in my ‘mom bag’ of tricks; and they sounded good at the moment. I then drove home and added a small apple to complete my post-run snack. When all was said and done, my post-run nosh provided 54 grams of carbohydrate and 16 grams of protein within the 30 minute window.
I enjoyed the drink. It was an easy, refreshing way to add protein to my post-run recovery snack.
