Check Out This New Performance Product
I’ve blogged about natural endurance fuel sources such as bananas, honey, raisins, mini sandwiches, and more. Natural food sources can certainly fuel endurance performance. Over the past couple years there has been a growing interest in my clients using the squeezable fruit options marketed towards kids. Naturally, when I heard this new product would be launched this month I was super excited for it to come out….
PowerBar has just brought to the shelves a squeezable fruit blend designed to fuel the athlete wanting a more natural sports fueling product. Performance Energy Blends are fruit based pouches for the athlete to carry as an easy to eat real fruit product in support of endurance performance. The banana blueberry blend is made with banana puree, blueberry puree, and dextrose. The mix of carbohydrates between the fructose (fruit sugar) with dextrose supports the delivery of this carbohydrate energy to our working muscles compared to a strictly fruit sugar source.
It tastes like you’re eating real fruit or food versus the thick sugary taste that is commonly associated with consuming a gel or candy-like fuel. It offers 21 grams of carbohydrate compared to the 25-27 grams often found in energy gels. It could certainly serve a purpose out on the trails, road, field, or court.
One major difference to note with the Performance Energy Blends versus many other performance products on the shelves is that the Performance Energy Blend lacks electrolytes. In fact, the product has no sodium. This is not a deal breaker by any means. It just means that an athlete who chooses to use such a product needs to consider their electrolyte source in effort to minimize potential electrolyte imbalances during long events or in warm conditions.
I like where products such as this are heading.
